Elizabeth Denwood (Mirek-6th Period)

Heroes aren't just people with boots and capes. They can be found in the most simplest places, such as your own community. Take Elizabeth Denwood for example, she works at Morill Elementary as a parent mentor. Mrs. Denwood works with kids in the 8th grade, and says she loves her job. She attended DePaul University for one year, and plans to return to continue on with her studies.

Many things inspired Elizabeth to become a parent mentor. One of them is that she loves her job and working with kids. "I love what I do , and I love who I'm with." She told us. At Morill, she likes to get students involved with extra curricular activities, like sport. She also works as a crossing guard and makes sure students get home safely. Along with her accomplishments, there were also challenges that she had to face. She had trouble paying for her children's education. But that has not stopped her from becoming a good parent and role model.

"You guys should stay in school and never give up." This was one of the things Elizabeth kept repeating to us. "I believe education is really important," Mrs. Denwood told us. This shows that she really cares about her community. She is always helping young students even when she is not volunteering at Morill. She gave us really good advice about education and why we should stay in school.

We asked Elizabeth what the definition of a hero was to her. "A hero takes time from his/her time to help other people without getting anything in return." This is why anybody can be a hero, all you have to do is a good action without wanting anything in return.
