Heroes are people who help the community, provide safety, and are very
responsible. In our case we interviewed someone we consider a hero named
Yaritza Elisalde. She is currently a PBIS (Positive Behavior
Interventions And Supports) social worker and lead internal coach for
PBIS program in Hancock. Also, she is helping her community by being a
therapist at a mental hospital community agency. Elisalde has worked as a
student advocate for Gear-Up in Hancock.

Yaritza Elisalde, thanks to her struggles in her family, such as not
enough support from her parents, and living the life with strict
parents, she learned to get what she wants. Even though she didn't
receive enough support from her parents, she still had the urge to
succeed in what she wanted to be. Elisalde wanted to show her parents
that she can go to college and study to be someone important and
successful in life, although her parents did not want her to go to
school to be a social worker, because they did not think it was
important enough. "Either way, they had to accept what I wanted to do;
I'm their daughter," she said.
Yaritza values her work because she puts smiles on people's faces, and
she feels that making someone smile shows that she can help out some way
with what the person is struggling with. "If you like what you do for
yourself in life and make others smile because of it, it's an extra push
to encourage you to do what you like," she says. Yaritza loves helping
the community because it makes it a better place. She grew up with a
strict Mexican family, being the youngest, which caused her many
struggles. Since then, education was her most important tool.
Yaritza believes that heroes are ordinary people who help assist others.
Also, that giving money is a great way to help others. Yaritza’s advice
for young people would be, "Criticism is always expected, and you
shouldn't listen to what people say because you have to embrace your
choice no matter what the situation is. If you are passionate, then go
for it." Seeing smiles on people’s faces shows her that she chose the
right career, and made some sort of change in their lives.
